Ophthalmology and Uveitis Consultation

The eye doctor begins with 5-step comprehensive eye care exam, facilitated by different special equipment and lenses to proceed with an in-depth examination of eye. It includes vision screening, automated refraction, manifest refraction, slit lamp microscopy, applanation tonometry, gonioscopy, indirect ophthalmoscopy.

These steps helps us check your overall eye health, from the (anterior eye health) front clear and coloured parts of the eye up to the back part of the eye consisting of your retina and optic nerve (posterior eye health).

Eye doctors follow these steps to make sure your eyes are healthy, helps us find the cause of your symptoms and come up with a treatment course designed for you, we also have a responsive follow up online support, should you need further guidance.

Specific details / terminology

A. Vision Screening for all ages :

Assessment of your usual vision at a standard distance of 20 ft. Eye doctors can also check your visual potential for improvement.

B. Automated Refraction :

A computer-based measurement of the refractive grade of your eye and helps eye doctors determine balance, comfortable visual correction for you.

C. Manifest/Subjective Refraction :

Trial lenses and frames are used to help you adjust to your measured eyeglass correction, some patients, esp. first time users may not tolerate their full corrective refraction.

D. Slit lamp microscopy :

Your eyes are viewed under a high magnification bio- microscope to examine the details of your eye, to determine general eye health of the cornea, lens, iris, anterior chamber or detect beginning eye diseases like cataracts, uveitis, retinal disease, glaucoma and optic nerve disease.

E. Applanation Tonometer :

An equipment to detect intraocular eye pressure (IOP), our eyes also has a measured eye pressure. This good equipment helps detect glaucoma, early glaucoma and glaucoma damage to the eye. This also helps us determine the choice of eye care for you.

F. Gonioscope :

A lens equipment we used to view the draining angles of the eye, which maintains the fluid dynamics inside the eye, it also helps us detect glaucoma and glaucoma damage to the eye. This also helps us determine the choice of eye care for you.

G. Indirect ophthalmoscopy :

A lens viewing system to check the health of the critical parts of the eye, the nerves, the sensory receptors, retina, macula and optic nerve which can be affected by medical diseases like diabetes, hypertension, glaucoma, infections and uveitis.

Lasers in Ophthalmology

Lasers in ophthalmology is a welcome development for non-invasive solutions for important visual threatening conditions like glaucoma with Laser Yag Iridotomy and Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty, and diabetic eye diseases with Focal or Pan retinal Photocoagulation, and those with recurrent “cataract-like, blurred vision” symptoms, which happens after cataract surgery, a cataract doesn’t recur, it is the implanted artificial lens that develops cloudiness, which is also swiftly, minutely address with lasers in the clinic, particularly a Laser Yag capsulotomy. For those who want to get rid of their glasses, and are unable to tolerate their contact lenses, a screening test for LASIK/PRK is a must for accurate planning of the procedure.

Specific details / terminology

A. Laser yage capsulotomy :

Swift laser procedure for addressing the opacified lens capsule, after an IOL implant during cataract surgery.

B. Laser yage iridotomy :

Swift laser modification of draining angles to help balance the eye pressure in patients with eye disease called narrow angle glaucoma or high eye pressure with angle closure glaucoma.

C. Laser yage selective laser trabeculoplasty :

Swift laser modification of draining angles to help balance the eye pressure in patients with eye disease called open angle glaucoma or pseudo exfoliation glaucoma.

D. Lasik/PRK :

Laser refractive surgery to correct refractive errors and eliminate the need for glasses and contact lenses.

E. Pan Retinal Photocoagulation :

This laser is standard in eye disease bleeding blood vessels, or extensive areas of abnormally leaking blood vessels in the retina, and help preserve remaining normal areas of the retina, especially the center of vision, the macula.

F. Focal laser Photocoagulation :

Uses the heat from a laser to seal or destroy focal areas of abnormal leaking blood vessels in the retina, and help preserve remaining normal areas of the retina, especially the center of vision, the macula.

Surgery in Ophthalmology

Some eye conditions, in addition to medical management, need extra care with surgical interventions to have better visual or cosmetic results, these are general ophthalmic procedures, pterygium surgery, cataract surgery, advance technology cataract surgery, novel intravitreal eye injections of vision saving medications.

Specific details / terminology

A. General ophthalmic surgery :

Chalazion, a benign eyelid mass, “kuliti” removal, pterygium “pugita” a fibrovascular tissue overgrowth over the white skin of the eye.

B. Cataract surgery :

A procedure to remove the lens that has turned hard and whitish from aging, disease states, or uncontrolled diabetes. After removal of the lens, an artificial lens implant is used to replace the removed cataracts lens, usually patient needs glasses correction for near work.

C. Advance Lens and Cataract Surgery :

Cataract surgery procedure with implantation of advance technology lens implants to restore more independent visual function, and less dependence with glasses correction for near work.

D. Complex Cataract Surgery :

Removal of an old, displaced or dislocated lens implant and a more complex implantation of new lens in the eye .

E. Intravitreal Eye Injection for Uveitis patients :

Intravitreal injection is a relatively a safe and effective procedure, where novel antibiotics, and eye medications are delivered directly inside the eye via a transcleral route, a site safely hidden by the eyelids and treatment is targeted to the area of disease which maybe from different infections like CMV Retinitis, Herpetic Retinitis, Toxoplasma Retinitis, inflammatory conditions like Vogt Koyanagi Harada Disease, malignant conditions like Intraocular Lymphoma and retinal diseases such as age related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, central retinal vein occlusion, macular edema. The eye doctor has a special training in uveitis, eye infections, autoimmune eye disease and malignant eye conditions.
